An essential oil is a concentrated, hydrophobic liquid containing volatile aroma compounds from plants. They are also known as volatile or ethereal oils, or simply as the "oil of" the plant material from which they were extracted.
So what does that mean to you for your natural homemade beauty recipes? Basically take the best benefits and attributes from plants, concentrate them and put them in a little bottle for you to add to your natural recipes. When using Essential oils, a little truly goes along way! A few drops for one recipe is plenty!
A little bit about Essential Oils also know as EOs.
When creating homemade natural nail soaks, cuticle oil, and any other nail care recipe or remedies at home, it's essential to understand what herbs, oils and foods work best for nail care. You can check that list here:  Herbs, Essential oils and Foods for strong, faster growing nails: Which foods and herbs help grow strong nails.  But you also must know how to use these oils and ingredients in your nail care  blends. Here's a little information on how to use essential oils in nail care recipes, what carrier oils are and how to properly mix and store your homemade nail blends and oils.
What amount of Essential oils to put in your nail recipes:
Normal dilution is 2.5%, ie, 15 drops of essential oil  to one ounce, 30 ml or 2 tablespoons full of carrier oil.
Essential oils should be diluted with a carrier oil. Quite a few essential oils are toxic in high amounts and this is why we dilute them. Please always check to see if the oil is user friendly and can be used with relative confidence on the skin. As some oils must be used in low dosages (1-5 drops). Please use the below as an estimate!!!!
  • Cuticle oils: 2 ounces carrier oil and upto 30 drops essential oil. ALWAYS check the potency level of your oils! Some must be used in very small amounts.
  • Cuticle and Nail Soaks: One use-  1 cup water, 1 tablespoon carrier oil, and up to 15 drops essential oils
  • Foot Soaks: Can use larger amount, up to 30 drops.
Using Carrier Oils in nail care recipes:
Carrier oil, also known as base oil or vegetable oil, is used to dilute essential oils and absolutes before they are applied to the skin. They are so named because they carry the essential oil onto the skin. Carrier oils do not contain a concentrated aroma, unlike essential oils, nor do they evaporate like them.
  • Carrier oils can be used alone or you can add essential oils for added health benefits.
  • Some carrier oils are odorless, but most have a faintly sweet, nutty aroma. If the smell is harsh, most likely it has become rancid or bad and needs to be throw away.
  • Carrier oils for skin care have many benefits alone. Most are moistening and some even have antibacterial effect.
  • You will always use more carrier oil then essential oils. 3% to 10% EOs to 97% to 90% Carrier Oils
